Senegal, which has a young and rapidly growing population, has increased its exports by 50 percent and its imports by 43 percent in the last 5 years, making it the most important commercial center of West Africa. The biggest obstacle to the fast-growing economy is energy access. In the country, where the population's access to energy ratio is around 30 percent, this rate drops to 9 percent in rural areas. About 25 percent of the country produces its own electricity with generators.
