Senegal, which has a young and rapidly growing population, has increased its exports by 50 percent and its imports by 43 percent in the last 5 years, making it the most important commercial center of West Africa. The biggest obstacle to the fast-growing economy is energy access. In the country, where the population's access to energy ratio is around 30 percent, this rate drops to 9 percent in rural areas. About 25 percent of the country produces its own electricity with generators. Significant energy investments are planned in the country in recent years so that the energy access problem does not harm the development momentum of economic activities. Senegal purchases a significant amount of electrical machinery and devices from Turkey, the eighth country from which it imports the most.

The "Strategic Africa" policy that President Erdogan put forward in 2003 with his visit to Senegal gained momentum. In the trade volume of 540 million dollars between Turkey and Senegal, 1 billion dollars was set as the target. With the increase in bilateral trade volumes in line with the determined targets, it is expected to offer opportunities for Turkish businessmen to increase their investments in the region. In this context, the energy sector stands out as the sector with the greatest potential.
